Keith Urban’s Dating History: From Laura Sigler to Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban has tried to keep his dating life private, despite his country music success.

Since making waves in the music industry in the 1990s, the singer has confirmed only three substantial relationships, most recently with his estranged wife, Nicole Kidman, who filed for divorce from the singer on September 30 after 19 years of marriage.

According to documents obtained by Us Weekly at the time, the actress cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the pair’s split.

In January 2025, Urban admitted he hasn’t always been the best romantic partner. During an appearance on the “Q with Tom Power” podcast, Urban explained that his 2002 hit “Somebody Like You” isn’t exactly the love song that many people believe it is.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s Quotes About Their Romance Before Split

“I was in a bad way personally, you know, struggling a lot,” he explained at the time. “I was in a relationship that was not … I was not in a good way. I thought at the time that my girlfriend seems to really love me. I wish I could love myself the way she seems to. So, the song was actually I wanna love someone like you, like you do. I wanna love me like you do.”

He continued, “I remember writing it and playing a demo for my girlfriend, not realizing what I’m doing playing this song for her. She hears it as a love song. And it finished and she just goes, ‘You’re a f***ing hypocrite!’ Then walked out of the room.”

Laura Sigler

Urban’s first relationship in the public eye was with Sigler. The pair dated in the 1990s, though there isn’t a lot of information about the duo during their time together. In 2006, after they split, she told The Mail, “He is very attractive and when he talks the talk, he can be very seductive. But I am not sure Keith will ever be ready to settle down.”

In the same year, Sigler also told The Sydney Morning Herald that Urban had a wild past. “Nicole and Keith might date for a while – but it won’t last very long. I don’t know her, but I know him very well,” she said, referring to Kidman. (we need to know who Nicole is, I’m assuming Kidman).

“He talks about having a family but there is a dark side to him. He was a drunk and a drug user. He has an addictive personality and always wants more. I am not sure he can make any one woman happy,” she also said. “There were a lot of lows with the drugs. I don’t have any dark past – he was probably the darkest part, but I’m on my own now and I’m happy about that.”

Sigler added: “He had numerous flings while we were together.”

Urban, who has been through three separate stints in rehab, has been candid about his past issues with substance abuse and alcohol addiction.

“I don’t talk a lot about [my sobriety] because I love my audience being able to just come and have a great time,” he told The Sunday Times in April 2022. “I’ve nothing against drugs or alcohol. Everyone does what they want to do to have a great time. I just realized I’m allergic to it. Someone said, ‘You have an allergy? What happens when you drink?’ And I said, ‘I break out in cuffs.’”

He continued: “I had to find a different way to be in the world. I’m glad it didn’t change anything about my music. I wrote plenty of hit songs while drunk. I wrote plenty sober. I feel lucky it hasn’t defined my creativity.”

Taylor and Urban reportedly dated in the early 2000s. The pair both sported matching tattoos that read “amor vincit omnia” — “love conquers all” — that they each covered up following their split.

Taylor first married ex-husband Matt Martinez, with whom she shares two children, Jake and Hunter. Following their split, she married NASCAR driver Burney Lamar. The pair tied the knot in December 2006.

Urban and Kidman met in January 2005 at the G’day USA gala in Los Angeles, where they exchanged phone numbers, though Urban didn’t call the Babygirl star for four months. Kidman later admitted to Ellen DeGeneres in 2017 that she had a crush on Urban at the time but thought that “he wasn’t interested.”

Things eventually changed and the pair reconnected. In 2019, Kidman told People that a romantic gesture from Urban in New York changed everything.

“It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York,” she said. “That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”

She continued, “It was pretty intense. I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”

Urban and Kidman announced their engagement in May 2006. Kidman shared the news while speaking at the 30th anniversary gala event for the organization UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women. “He’s actually my fiancé. I wouldn’t be bringing my boyfriend,” she told People at the event.

The duo tied the knot in June 2006 in Sydney, Australia. The wedding was attended by Kidman’s children with Tom Cruise, daughter Isabella Jane and son Connor Antony.

The pair went on to weather numerous challenges together, including Urban’s stint in rehab for alcohol addiction. Urban left rehab in January 2007, and the couple moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in November of the same year.
