Emma Stone Wears Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Great Expectations’ Outfit in NYC

Emma Stone is cosplaying Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations.

On Wednesday, October 22, the actress, 36, wore a green set from designer Donna Karan’s archives during her appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Paltrow, 53, famously sported the look in the 1998 film, a contemporary riff on the Charles Dickens classic.

A smiling Stone posed for photos in New York City ahead of her talk-show spot. Like Paltrow’s movie ensemble, a lone clasp connected her long-sleeved, collared blouse, leaving her belly somewhat exposed. Paired with a maxi skirt, the monochrome outfit looked as fresh and cool as it did nearly 30 years ago, when it first appeared in Karan’s spring/summer 1996 collection. Stone, similar to Paltrow, accessorized with simple black leather sandals by Manolo Blahnik.

All of my clothes in [Great Expectations] were Donna Karan, pretty much,” Paltrow explained, recalling a meeting with Karan, 77, in which she learned that everything in the movie was green.”

She noted, “Every set, every fabric, every costume. And I thought she was kidding.”

Paltrow starred opposite Ethan Hawke in the Alfonso Cuarón-directed romantic drama, playing Estella to his Finn.

Speaking with Vogue, she “remembered that Donna had done a very green collection and it just so happened that it was all kind of perfect, and perfectly nineties, and elegant, and perfect for this character. It’s so funny that this look got so much — and continues to get so much — traction.”

As for Stone, she is currently promoting her new black comedy Bugonia, for which she shaved her head. The film, directed by Stone’s longtime collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos, is set for release on Friday, October 24, and features Stone as a high-powered CEO who gets kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who believe she’s an alien.

“No better feeling in the world,” Stone said of losing her red tresses during an August 2025 interview with Vogue.

She continued, “The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.”

Stone recalled a time when her mother, Krista, underwent treatment for breast cancer and lost her hair.

“She actually did something brave,” the actress explained. “I’m just shaving my head.”

During a media appearance in September, Stone remembered “panicking” amid the pressure of shaving her head in front of the camera.

“And I was like, I’m [doing this] because I get to do what I love, and my mom was there with me, and I was like, ‘What a gift! It’s hair,’” said Stone, who is growing out a pixie cut. “So it was actually one of the greatest experiences of my life, very freeing, and it’s just hair. I thought it would be longer by now, but it’s just hair!”
